Albany High student, a Gates Millennium Scholar, is on his way to Cornell University

Albany High School senior Lewis Stitt, an Eagle Scout, musician, peer tutor and future  engineer, has been named a Gates Millennium Scholar.

The Gates Millennium Scholar Program was established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, among other objectives.

Stitt, who has a grade point average of 93.53, was accepted to Cornell University via early decision, and he will study electrical engineering there. He has also won the Cornell University School of Engineering John McMullen’s Dean Scholarship and the New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence. He has applied for several other scholarships and is waiting notification.

Stitt’s guidance counselor at Albany High School, Marna Atkin, said he has followed the most rigorous and challenging academic program possible, taking honors and Advanced Placement courses wherever possible.

“Lewis has an engaging spark and style – whether it is actively participating in an AP Physics class discussion, or earning an environmental science badge in the Boy Scouts, Lewis possesses qualities that make him the very special and promising young man that he is,” Atkin wrote in her letter to the Gates Foundation recommending Stitt for the scholarship.
