City's Tulip Queen pays special visit to 3rd and 4th grade students

Albany's 2006 Tulip Queen Amanda Benincasa paid a special visit to the 3rd and 4th grade summer school students at Montessori Magnet School on Thursday, July 27, during a class unit on the City of Albany. The visit complemented a lesson in Mrs. Harkavy's class on Washington Park, where the city coronates its new Tulip Queen each May.

Amanda read a book called, "A Baker's Dozen" to the students, and spoke about her ascension to the throne. The Queen also fielded several intelligent questions from the students, who were very curious to know if she was a real queen, if she lived in a castle, and also if she liked school and reading. The answers were that she is not a real queen, but a college student who lives at home with her mother. And yes, she loves reading and school.

Throughout the week, students also studied city Mayor Jerry Jennings and the city Web site, as well as the city libraries, museums, the Hudson River and trade and tugboat travel on it. In addition, students designed their own City of Albany mobiles.

The study unit supports the district's 3rd and 4th grade curriculum, which envisions student awareness of their community, and is in-line with state standards.

The week following the Tulip Queen's visit, Mrs. Harkavy's class is to study the role of state government in Albany, and is anticipating exploring the city by bus.
