Summer School 2019

This summer, the City School District of Albany will offer summer school programs for students in elementary school, middle school and high school. The district also will offer specialized programs for students with disabilities and English as a new language students..


Many of these programs are designed to help students meet the state’s academic standards and graduation requirements. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at every location.


Transportation will be provided for programs serving students entering kindergarten-grade 8 (see below to learn more). Transportation will be provided.


Elementary school

Jump Start

For: Children entering kindergarten in September who have not gone to prekindergarten, and pre-K students who might benefit from additional instruction. This four-week program will help children begin kindergarten excited and ready to learn.

Dates: July 15-Aug. 9

Days: Monday-Friday

Times: 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Transportation provided: Yes

Registration: Register for kindergarten at Central Registration, 75 Watervliet Ave., then contact our Early Childhood Office (see below).

Elementary Summer Enrichment

For: Students currently in kindergarten-grade 5. Principals work with teachers to identify students who are near grade level and would benefit from extended summer learning to prepare for next school year.

Dates: July 8-Aug. 9

Days: Monday-Friday

Time: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Middle school

Middle School Summer Start

For: Students currently in grades 6-8 who failed more than two core classes are required to attend Middle School Summer Start to advance to the next grade

Dates: July 8-Aug. 9

Days: Monday-Friday

Time: 8:10 a.m.-noon

Location: Edmund J. O'Neal Middle School of Excellence, 50 North Lark St.

High school

For: Albany resident students currently in grades 9-12 who have fewer than 28 unexcused absences who need to recover course credit or prepare to retake a Regents exam. Click here to see a brochure that details summer school class offerings. Please note that high school summer school will be held at William S. Hackett Middle School due to construction at Albany High School.

Days: Monday-Thursday

Special Education Extended School Year

For: Special education students in kindergarten through grade 12 (classrooms with 12 students, one teacher, four aides only) if a student’s individualized education program review indicates that he or she qualifies

For: English as a New Language students in kindergarten through grade 12 to improve basic literacy skills and understand local civics

Location: Thomas O'Brien Academy of Science and Technology (TOAST), Lincoln Park off Delaware Avenue

Transportation: Yes. Yellow bus for students from kindergarten-grade 5; CDTA bus for students grades 6-12.
