Albany High track team to compete in two
events at State Championship Meet
Congratulations to the boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams for their
great success at the state qualifier track meet on June 11th and 12th.
The
boys’ 400-meter relay team – made up of Jalon Scott, Kareem Morris,
Corey Harris, Fuad Jusic, and alternate Jaah-mel Arrington - finished
first in the qualifiers with a new school record of 42.8 seconds. They
will now represent Section II at the New York State Championship Track
Meet to be held June 19th and 20th in Syracuse. Earlier in the season, the
relay team broke the previous school record of 43.1 seconds - a record
that had stood since 1981.
Kareem Morris, a member of the record-setting relay team, also finished
first in the 200-meter dash, qualifying him to compete in that event at
the State Championship Meet.
Alex
Schettino finished tied for second place in the pole vault competition
during the state qualifiers. With a pole vault of 14’ 6’’, Schettino
ranks sixth in the state and was named to the National Elite Performance
List - Silver Standard by MilesplitUS, one of the premiere organizations
for high school track and field and cross-country. However, due to a
tiebreaker rule in the state qualifiers, Schettino will not be able to
compete in the State Championship Meet.
Also
narrowly missing opportunities to compete at states were Corey Harris (2nd
place, 100-meters), Jaah-mel Arrington (5th place,
100-meters), and Fuad Jusic (4th place, 400-meters).
The
girls’ 3,200-meter relay team – made up of Catherine Calsolaro, Kyniqua
Marable, Fern Beetle-Moorcroft, and Catherine Duggan - set a new school
record of 9 minutes, 58.1 seconds on their way to a fifth-place finish
at the state-qualifying meet; however, that time does not qualify the
team to compete at the State Championship Meet.
