Michaelis, Wu lead 11 Albany High athletes on Big 10 all-star teams

Seniors Matt Wu and Katie Michaelis were named Big 10 soccer MVPs for the 2009 season, leading 11 members of the boys’ and girls’ team who earned all-star recognition following their championship seasons.

Wu anchored a defense that allowed only four goals in 16 regular-season games as the Falcons went unbeaten during the regular season (13-0-3) and won their first Big 10 title since 2005. Albany High also beat Columbia 2-0 in the first round of the Section II playoffs before losing to Guilderland in the quarterfinals.

Joining Wu on the boys’ first team were sophomore midfielder Marty Ryan and senior forward Owen Daniels. Senior midfielder Kevin Tuffey and sophomore forward Stephano Sainato rounded out the second team all-stars.

For the Lady Falcons, Michaelis was the league’s leading scorer and one of the top scorers in the Capital Region with 19 goals. She led the Lady Falcons (12-5) to their first outright Big 10 championship in school history.

Midfielder Hayley Kellam and forward Alex Huss, both seniors, also made first team along with Michaelis. Freshman defender Alex Kellam, junior midfielder Leah Moran and senior defender Amanda Villela made second team.
