Albany High sophomore Berman
competes in state wrestling tournament
Albany
High School sophomore Shawn Berman became the first wrestler to
represent the Falcons at the state tournament in eight years on Feb. 26, competing at 96
pounds following his second-place finish in Section II.
Berman, who finished the Falcons’ regular season with an
impressive 40-5 record, is the
first Albany High wrestler to qualify for states since 2002, when Brian
Sheldon represented the Falcons at 215 pounds.
"Shawn
had a monster year," coach Nick Lettieri said. "We had a good idea that
he would be going to the states."
Berman lost his first match in the state
tournament, then bounced back with a win in the wrestlebacks. He was
eliminated in his next match.
On March 18, the Times Union named him to the
second team of winter wrestling all-stars.
"He does all the little things," Lettieri
said. "He runs extra on his own, and not just a little bit -- six or
seven miles. He also wrestles a lot in the offseason. He's in great
shape and is a muscular 96-pounder. He wrestles hard at every mach, and
good things happen."
