Ryan leads Falcons' postseason soccer honors with all-area
and all-state recognition
Senior
Marty Ryan, who led Albany High to its second Big 10 boys’ soccer title
in three years this fall, has been named a first-team all-area selection
by the Times Union
and
CapitalRegionSoccer.com, and also has been selected as a fourth-team
all-state pick for the second year in a row.
Ryan, a fourth-team all-state pick as a midfielder in
2010, moved to defense at midseason this year and had a dramatic impact
on the Falcons’ success. After
the switch, Albany High went 7-1-1 over its final nine Big 10 games,
allowing just two goals and recording seven shutouts in that stretch.
Ryan (pictured at right) also was named
co-MVP of the Big 10. He was one of just five Section II players to
earn all-state recognition in the large-school category this year.
Senior Stefano Sainato also earned first-team Class
AA recognition from CapitalRegionSoccer.com and second-team
all-area recognition from the
Times Union this
season. A forward, Sainato was among the Capital Region’s leading
scorers with 22 goals. Sainato also was a first-team All-Big 10
selection.
Ryan and Sainato also were among nine finalists for
the CapitalRegionSoccer.com Class AA player of the year award. Coach
Dave Weiss was among three finalists for coach of the year.
Seniors Seamus Daniels (defense), Tong Mathayo
(forward) and Austin Villela (midfield), and junior Tyler Stempsey
(forward) earned second-team All-Big 10 recognition.
The Falcons (13-4-1) beat defending Class AA champion
Saratoga Springs in the first round of the Section II playoffs before
falling to Guilderland in the quarterfinals.
In girls’ soccer, juniors Alex Kellam (defense) and
Hannah Moran (midfield) were named to the All-Big 10 first team. Seniors
JoVaughna Honeyghan (defense) and Meredith O’Connell (defense), and
freshman Mollie Kather (midfield) earned second-team recognition.
