Boys' cross country team caps perfect Big 10 season

Led by seniors Justin Thompson, Sam Wells, Quentin Lott and Cesar Lora, the Albany High School boys’ cross country team won its second straight regular-season Big 10 championship in 2007, finishing 8-0 in the conference.

son included Justin's

record on the Falcons’ home course in Washington Park earlier in the month. Sam was recognized Oct. 23 as the WNYT/TV-13 Dunkin’ Donuts Athlete of the Week for his overall success and determination in overcoming asthma and a circulatory disorder to be a top competitor.

Coach Stanley Gasorowski cited the leadership of his three co-captains -- Sam, Quentin and Cesar -- as a significant factor in the team’s success.

“It’s a very nice team, a very hard-working team, and they’re a pleasure to coach,” said Mr. Gasorowski, who completed his 31st year as Albany’s cross country coach.

Competing against Amsterdam and Bishop Maginn on Oct. 2, Justin covered the 2.82-mile Washington Park course in a record 15 minutes, 37 seconds. He was Albany's top finisher in each Big 10 competition.

“He’s worked very hard to get where he’s at,” Mr. Gasorowski said.

Quentin cut eight minutes off his best time as a junior to establish himself as a regular among the Falcons’ top individuals this fall. Sam has overcome health concerns to become one of Albany's top runners, and Mr. Gasorowski lauds him as one of the best leaders he has had in his long tenure.

“Sam is always motivated for the team’s success,” he said. “His great forte is his willingness to sacrifice his time to help others. He always has the dedication, desire and determination to excel.”
