means Advanced Placement. AP classes are college-level courses that may
result in college credit.
**IB
means classes in the International Baccalaureate program. IB is a
worldwide organization that designs academically challenging education
programs for students. Students can take a full IB curriculum leading to
an IB diploma in addition to a high-school diploma, or select individual
IB courses. IB diplomas are highly regarded by top colleges and
universities.
Each academy provides the same core
courses in math, English, science and social studies, as well
as art, health and Spanish 1. Physical education, band,
orchestra and chorus include students from all four academies. Each
academy also provides honors, special-education classes and
English-as-a-second-language services. All
other elective courses are grouped according to each academy’s
unique theme.
Students can take electives in different academies
and the electives are equally available to all.
Summer opportunities for freshmen in the
Discovery Academy
Discovery
Academy provides a one-week, full-day arts-based summer
camp for incoming freshmen that uses the performing arts to teach about
interpersonal communication. There, students have an opportunity to
improve their active
listening skills, gain a better understanding of body language
and
role-play.
What's
so special about the Discovery Academy?
By next
September, Discovery Academy
will have a state-of-the-art multi-media production facility that
includes equipment for video and music recording. Discovery Academy also makes
great use of Albany High’s existing theater, music and art spaces.
