Board of Education approves new seventh member

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 10, 2010) -- The City School District of Albany Board of Education elected Edith Leet as its newest member Feb. 10, filling the position vacated when Mark Barth, Ph.D., resigned at the end of January.

The board approved the appointment during a special meeting at Academy Park, selecting her from among six candidates who volunteered to fill the position. All six made presentations to the board during its Feb. 4 meeting at Albany High School.

"I am a life-long advocate of education and an ardent supporter of the Albany public schools," Ms. Leet said in her letter of interest to the board. "I have been a volunteer in the district for many years and in many capacities. I am also an active volunteer in several other organizations that give me numerous contacts in the wider community and a broad perspective on the resources and possibilities available to our children."

Ms. Leet ran unsuccessfully for the board in 2008, earning 5,507 votes in the city-wide election. Daniel Egan, the current board president, and Rose Brandon, the current secretary, were elected at that time.

The mission of the City School District of Albany is to educate and nurture all students to be responsible citizens, critical thinkers and lifelong learners to successfully compete in the global community by providing an academically rigorous and safe environment in partnership with parents, students and the community. The district serves approximately 8,400 students in 16 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students.
