ALBANY, N.Y. (Dec. 11, 2009)
--
The City School
District of Albany will enroll all prekindergarten students for the
2010-11 school year through a new lottery in April. The lottery will
apply to all of the nearly 600 prekindergarten seats, including the
district's three magnet schools, the Dual Language Program and all
programs operated by community-based organizations.
The new lottery
has been required by the State Education Department to assure access
and opportunity for all families. It will be conducted April 16 in
conjunction with the annual magnet lottery, which will include only
grades K-6. Both lotteries will be conducted by Joseph White
Associates, which has conducted the district's magnet lottery since
the early 1990s.
The district will hold open forums for parents and
community members to provide input on the process for the new
lottery and its implications for kindergarten enrollment. Meetings
will be held Monday, Dec. 14 at Pine Hills Elementary School and
Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Sheridan Preparatory Academy. Both meetings
will begin at 5:30 p.m. Feedback from the community meetings will
help shape recommendations the district will present to the Board of
Education in January.
We invite you to
download a Q&A with additional details about the the district's
prekindergarten programs and current enrollment policies.
Applications for the lottery will be available beginning March 1 and
must be returned by March 31 at 3 p.m. to be eligible for the
drawing. The district will hold a Prekindergarten Blast at Schuyler
Achievement Academy from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, March 6 to
provide families more information about the 19 different pre-K
options.
Families
interested in grades K-6 at one of the magnet schools will complete
and return an application for the magnet lottery. Those applications
will be available Feb. 1 and also must be returned by March 31. The
district's magnet elementary schools are
Albany School of Humanities
(ASH), Montessori Magnet School and
Thomas O'Brien Academy of
Science and Technology (TOAST).
