Senior named top scholar-athlete

ALBANY, N.Y. (March 8, 2010) -- Albany High School senior Fern Beetle-Moorcroft has been named the top scholar-athlete in Section II girls’ basketball.

Beetle-Moorcroft the scholar entered the 2009-10 school year with the second-highest academic average in her class. Beetle-Moorcroft the athlete was a key contributor to Lady Falcons’ basketball this season, leading her team in 3-point shooting and averaging 8 points per game. Albany High finished second in the Big 10, going 10-2 in conference play and 14-6 overall.

Two of Beetle-Moorcroft’s best performances on the court came against Big 10 rivals Catholic Central and Bishop Maginn. She had 17 in the Lady Falcons’ overtime win at Catholic Central in December, and a season-high 22, including four 3-pointers, in a home win against Maginn in January.

She was chosen from more than 1,000 girls who played Section II basketball this year.

She also was a leader on the Albany High cross-country team last fall.
