Students 'paws' for a cause
 ALBANY, N.Y. (Dec.

Students at Albany School of Humanities (ASH) and Pine Hills
Elementary School will take a break during their holiday concerts to
give the Mohawk-Hudson Humane Society more than 1,000 pounds of pet
food collected during the past month.
The pet-food donation drive -- "Paws for a Cause" -- culminates at a
series of holiday concerts at both schools, starting with ASH on
Dec. 12 and ending at Pine Hills on Dec. 22. The school-wide efforts
were coordinated by music teacher Nicole Sommers-Bradley.
Presentation of the pet smorgasbord will take place during a "paws"
about 20 minutes into each concert. At that time, representatives
for the Humane Society will be on hand to accept the food and thank
the students for their work. (The ASH students in the photo at

The schools began collecting the pet food on Nov. 1.
The mission of the City School District of
Albany is to educate and nurture all students to be
responsible citizens, critical thinkers and lifelong learners to
successfully compete in the global community by providing an
academically rigorous and safe environment in partnership with parents,
students and the community. The district serves about 8,700
students in 15
elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood
schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as
well as other innovative academic opportunities for students,
including four themed academies at Albany High
School.
