Winter guard catches a first
ALBANY, N.Y. (Jan.
28, 2012) -- The Albany Falcons winter guard took
first place on Saturday at the team's first formal competition of
the season.
Winter guard is an indoor activity based on color
guard – the flag-twirling brigades that accompany
marching bands in parades during warmer weather.
When the parades stop, color guard brings the
activity inside and winter guard comes into its own.
Teams design unique routines set to music and their
performance is judged on artistic flair, precision
and coordination.
The City School District of Albany has two winter
guard teams, and both competed Saturday at the
Mid-York
Color Guard Circuit Invitational at Shenendehowa
High School.
The more experienced team
competed in the Scholastic Regional Athletic class,
took first place and earned a record-high score.
That group is composed of a dozen young women from
Albany High School, Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle
School and William S. Hackett Middle School.
The
rookie group -- composed of eight
young women from Albany High, Albany School of
Humanities, Montessori Magnet School, Myers and
Hackett -- held its own in the novice class and
outscored teams that outranked them.
Winter guard coaches include Bryan Cady, Kassandra
Holmes, Kimberly Radtke and Donel Mataruga. The
teams' next competition is in two weeks in East
Syracuse.
The mission of the City School District of
Albany is to educate and nurture all students to be
responsible citizens, critical thinkers and lifelong learners to
successfully compete in the global community by providing an
academically rigorous and safe environment in partnership with parents,
students and the community. The district serves about 8,700
students in 15
elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood
schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as
well as other innovative academic opportunities for students,
including four themed academies at Albany High
School.
