The William S. Hackett Middle School renovation
project has received the Preservation League of New York State’s
prestigious “excellence in historic preservation” award.
"It’s an honor that the Preservation League
selected Hackett Middle School for this award and recognized this
historic project for the City School District of Albany and our entire
community,” said Superintendent Raymond Colucciello, Ed.D. “The building
is truly magnificent. Everyone involved with the restoration deserves
recognition.”
This is the third award the district has received
for the Hackett project, which was part of the district’s facilities
project to completely rebuild or renovate all of its elementary and
middle-school buildings this decade.
The Historic Albany Foundation recognized Hackett
with a Preservation Merit Award for the rehabilitation of a significant
public building in 2009. The second recognition for Hackett was an Award
of Merit presented by the Eastern New York Chapter of the American
Institute of Architects at the annual 2009 Design Awards reception.
Built in 1925-27 and designed by renowned
architect Marcus T. Reynolds, Hackett is named in honor of Albany’s 67th
mayor. The school was completely updated in 2007-08 as part of the
district’s decade-long facilities project, incorporating many of
Reynolds’ original features in a complete overhaul and update of every
floor and wing in the building.
District partners on the project were Envision
Architects PC, of Albany; Excel Engineering PC, of Latham; Klepper, Hahn
and Hyatt Structural Engineers of Syracuse; Sano Rubin Construction Co.,
of Albany and Hamlin Design Group.
The Hackett project was one of nine statewide to
receive the prestigious award, presented on May 12.
