Thompson is looking for a few good people.
OK, more than a few.
The new volunteer coordinator for the City School
District of Albany, Thompson is the bridge between district schools and
people in the community who want to support them. She’s looking for
people willing to spend a few minutes or a few hours helping out across
the district.
“Some people think volunteering in schools is limited to
reading to children, or that you have to have a child in the school,”
she said. “Others think they have nothing to offer or that it has to be
a big time commitment.
“The reality is that there are numerous opportunities to
help out, and you can work in a school or from your home.”
Family members, neighbors, friends, working people,
retirees, students – all are welcome.
Thompson is committed to finding the right fit between a
volunteer’s interests and a school’s needs – a critical piece in
assuring that everyone benefits.
.
The Board of Education appointed Thompson in March in
response to the need identified in the district’s strategic plan, “A
Vision for Tomorrow.” Thompson is in the process of identifying
volunteer programs currently operating in the district and evaluating
their effectiveness.
She also has developed district guidelines for
volunteering.
