Message from the Superintendent

September 2005
In response to recent events, we want to assure parents, students, staff, and community members that school safety is a priority for the Albany School District.

The district sets high standards for student behavior and takes the safety of our schools very  seriously. Here's what we are doing:

Random searches are being conducted at Albany High School. Students are randomly selected as they enter the school. District administrators and school resource officers, with the assistance of Albany Police Officers, search students' book bags, purses, and coats. A metal-detecting wand (much like those used in airports searches) is waved over students' bodies.

We are enforcing the code of conduct. At the beginning of the school year, parents received the district's Student Code of Conduct & Discipline handbook. It clearly and concisely outlines what is expected of each and every student when they are in school and the disciplinary action that is enforced when a student does not behave appropriately.

We will be conducting a full assessment of our safety procedures and policies to find out what we are doing right and what we can do better.

District administrators, the Albany Police Department, and Mayor Jennings will continue to work together to address the issue of youth safety.

The City School District of Albany is committed to the safety and security of all of our schools. We can't do this alone, however. We need parents, students, and community leaders to be committed to continuing to provide our students and staff with safe learning environments.
