Harriet Gibbons High School
75 Watervliet Avenue
In 2003,
Harriet Gibbons High School moved to a newly renovated building on
Watervliet Avenue. The school was previously located at 400 Sheridan
Avenue in a crowded and run-down building leased from the Catholic
Diocese. The building at that location was torn down to make way for a
new school,
Sheridan Preparatory Academy. To view pictures of
the new facility, visit the
Harriet Gibbons Photo Gallery.
The new
Harriet Gibbons High School includes:
-
Larger
classrooms with modern fixtures and a computer in each classroom,
providing students with high-level, hands-on learning opportunities.
-
Modern
science labs with running water and computers.
-
A
cutting-edge library/media center that is home to 25 computers with Internet
access, providing students with a place to conduct research and do
homework.
-
A
fitness center stocked with weight-lifting and cardiovascular
equipment donated by the General Electric Elfun Society and other
local organizations. The center provides students with the
opportunity to improve their physical health.
The new
building was selected for its size and proximity to many local
businesses. Students participating in school-to-work programs and
internships can get to work easily. The new location is also near to the
CDTA bus line.
The school
is now handicapped accessible, fully air conditioned, and equipped with
a fire detection and sprinkler system.
