Myers principal update
School District of Albany Board of Education is
scheduled to act at its Oct. 5 meeting on a staff
recommendation to appoint Jennifer Chatain as the new
principal at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School.

Panetta, who the board recently appointed as an
assistant director of pupil personnel services.

educational leader, Chatain has spent the majority of
her 22-year career in Albany, Schenectady and Troy, in
the classroom and in administrative leadership positions
in public, parochial and charter schools.
beginning as a building substitute at Albany School of
Humanities (ASH), she was an elementary teacher in Troy
for 3½ years. She then served for five years as an
elementary and middle-school teacher, and as a
middle-school assistant principal, at two Albany charter
schools – New Covenant and Albany Prep.
She then took over as the principal of
the St. Kateri Parish School in Schenectady and served
in that role from 2009-14. She led the Schenectady City
School District’s Central Park School, serving students
from kindergarten through grade 8, for two years before
working for the 2016-17 school year as director of
school improvement for Questar III BOCES (Rensselaer,
Columbia and Greene counties).
About Myers Middle School
The school is named after abolitionists
Stephen and Harriet Myers, who lived in Albany from the
1830s through the 1850s. The Myerses played an important
role in helping hundreds of African-Americans gain
freedom in the Albany area via the Underground Railroad.

Constructed in 2005 through the City
School District of Albany’s facilities project, Myers
Middle School is a modern three-story, 140,000-square
foot facility. The school contains 24 general-education
classrooms, six special-education classrooms, six
science rooms with prep space, cutting-edge technology
classrooms, modern family and consumer science
classrooms, two art classrooms with kiln and storage and
music, choral and band room.
