Clement nurtures whole child with community help

Similar to their colleagues throughout the City School District of Albany, staff at the Tony Clement Center for Education strive to not only support students academically, but also socially and emotionally.

That means, often, going above and beyond the work of a typical educator and ensuring the students have food at home, clothes and even toiletries. And in response to need, faculty and staff created Tony’s Closet and Tony’s Pantry.

Tony’s Closet is a small and discrete room where students can pick out clothes, outerwear, undergarments, shoes, toiletries and feminine products – all for free. Clement’s staff understand that going without necessities has a detrimental impact on a student’s ability to learn and make good choices.

“We want to be the support our students require to succeed” explained Clement's Community School Site Coordinator, Tyesha Young.  (MORE)

Building honors former principal

The City School District of Albany Board of Education has renamed the building that delivers the district's alternative-education programs in memory of former administrator Anthony I. "Tony" Clement.

Clement served the district for 18 years before he died of cancer in May 2012. He was 47 and serving in his first year as principal at Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy at the time. Prior to that assignment, he spent one year as principal at the Alternative Learning Center and five years as principal at Harriet Gibbons High School, an alternative program that served students in grades 9-12 through the 2005-06 school year and freshmen only until its closure at the end of the 2009-10 school year.
